In the United States, one in every six women (and one in ten for males) experiences the agonizing reality of sexual assault (according to Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network). This prevalent issue demands attention, and I have chosen to address it through my series, 'One in Six.' This body of work serves as a commentary to the enduring silence surrounding the traumatic events of women who have been victimized. Too often, society dismisses the severity of these experiences with statements such as 'she shouldn't have dressed like that' or 'boys will be boys,' perpetuating a culture of victim-blaming. 'One in Six' is a series of sculpted ceramic fingers meticulously arranged to convey the emotional and physical impact of sexual assault. The deliberate fusion of the fingers symbolizes the correlation of these experiences, echoing the interconnected lives of the survivors. The broken and ripped-off fingernails are a representation of the struggles being endured. There is also one final sculpted figure that contains fingers, noses, and a mouth which relates to the idea of victims being silenced whenever they try to voice the struggles they have endured. The artistic process involved utilizing a soda kiln with baking soda, resulting in a muddy bronzeish color the color is aimed to represent the idea of feeling dirty in one's own skin. The unpredictable nature of this method mirrors the uncertainty of the experience of sexual assault. By presenting the artwork in this manner, I aim to evoke a deep-rooted response, prompting viewers to confront the uncomfortable reality that one in six women faces. Through 'One in Six,' I strive to break the silence, foster empathy for survivors, and provoke change in policies and for these issues to be viewed in a more serious matters, I believe that by addressing this sensitive topic, we contribute to the collective effort to eradicate the stigma surrounding sexual assault through breaking the stigma and silence we are able to talk to and help survivors get the help and support they might need.
