The Impermanence of Identity
The Impermanence of Identity is a photographic series that delves into the ever-changing nature of identity. My artistic journey focuses on non-archival processes, particularly the captivating medium of cyanotype. Through this exploration, I seek to depict how identities are washed away by centuries of colonization. Cyanotype, with its delicate interplay of light and chemistry, acts as a poignant metaphor for the fleeting nature of self-expression. Each artwork I create becomes a testament to this impermanence, challenging traditional ideas of permanence as it gradually deteriorates over time. By incorporating various objects into cyanotype prints, I aim to invoke an understanding of how materials can help with understanding the uniqueness of identity, encapsulating them within a medium that echoes their ephemeral quality. As I dive deeper into this artistic process, I experiment with printing on diverse surfaces, each presenting unique challenges and opportunities. This experimentation not only expands my artistic skills but also deepens my understanding of the intrinsic connection between medium and message. Ultimately, my cyanotype creations serve as reflections of the impermanence that defines our existence, inviting viewers to contemplate the existence of identity that is not known at surface level and understand that it is something that cannot simply be erased unlike the decaying objects I worked with.
