Intimacy of Family Style
As a biracial individual, I navigated the complexities of race while growing up in a predominantly white community. Despite the challenges, my immediate family, who shared similar struggles, provided a profound understanding of my experiences. "Intimacy of Family Style" delves into this intimate connection, portraying it through various intimate elements. featuring a love-seat couch with archival family photos meticulously hand-sewn with vibrant red thread against a contrasting floral pattern and Prussian blue hue. The use of a love-seat provides a comfortable, familiar environment, which represents the closeness of my immediate family and the red thread is specifically used to represent the bloodline that ties us all together. Facing this, is a life-sized self-portrait made of Thali-like trays. which is a traditional Indian dinnerware made to hold more than one type of food. The trays made to represent these are crafted from stoneware and glazed with a clear glaze, all employing the cyanotype process. The handmade trays and hand-sewn couch serve as tangible manifestations of the intimate bond shared within familial relationships.
